Don’t just start a blog based on something you are passionate about or love. You NEED to know these things first.

What Is A Blog Niche?

A blog niche is a topic, category, or specific theme that all your blog content focuses on or around. It is usually specific and targeted.

Some blog niches can be broader than others. And many blog niches have subtopics within them.

When starting a blog, there’s the issue of making sure you write for your audience above what you want to write about yourself.

Your blog content should be about what readers need or want to know about, solving problems, and answering questions that people actually search for.

If you focus on blogging in a specific niche, it will help you do this. It also has the benefit of making yourself look more credible and experienced.

How Do I Choose A Niche?

1 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

In order to choose the best niche for your blog, you want to focus on the niches that are profitable first.

Ask yourself some key questions:

  • Do people search for the topics of your niche?
  • How many people are searching for it?
  • Do people care about your niche and its topics?
  • Do people buy things related to it?

Does Your Blog Niche Idea Have Enough Interest?

You can easily check this using Google Trends or a keyword research tool, such as Keysearch or Ahrefs

The number of people searching for your niche and related keywords is usually a good indication of whether they care about it. But you can also check if it’s something that gets often talked about on social media.

Try to put your audience’s shoes:

If you were interested in this particular niche, would you care enough to know the latest information and research it?

Would you be willing to purchase products, tools, and resources related to it? Can you find examples of things that already sell?

Are People Willing To Spend Money & Buy Within Your Blog Niche Ideas?

2 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

A more tangible way to tell if people are willing to buy in your blog niche is whether there are affiliate programs for your niche. And also whether there are related products on Amazon that sell well.

Can you find any income reports for your niche? And what are the other big blogs and websites in your niche doing that could be related to making money?

For example, look for monetization methods like ads, selling affiliate products, and even their own products.

These can all give you hints as to whether people are likely to buy. And what methods of making money might be the most efficient.

Can You Clearly Identify Your Blog Niche Ideas Audience?

You should always be writing with a particular person in mind. For example, if you want to start a blog in something as broad as the food niche. You’ll likely need to narrow it down to a more specific sub-topic within the niche.

While food is a highly popular evergreen topic and is never likely to come out of fashion, you should focus on something more targeted, like:

  • Easy dinner meals
  • Keto
  • Vegan
  • Cupcakes
  • Healthy meals

Perhaps you’ll have the idea to create content based on working moms. If so, then the kind of content and topics they would be interested in would be far different from a couple with no children.

If you cannot identify whom you’re planning to write for, then you’ll find it difficult to grow your blog successfully. This is because it will be harder to figure out which topics within your niche will get the most traction and grow a dedicated audience.

How Safe Is Your Blog Niche?

3 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

You might have a unique idea for a blog niche, but you need to ask yourself whether you expect that niche to still be there in a few years since it can take time to gain traction on a blog.

You don’t want to pick a topic that is likely to disappear before you make any money.

How can you tell if your blog niche is safe?

You can look at things like Google Trends to see how search volumes change over a long period. Or even some keyword research tools, like Keysearch and Keywords Everywhere, will show you a graph of how a particular topic is trending over time.

It’s also worth considering whether your niche will be affected by other factors like recession or, more recently, at the forefront of people’s minds, pandemics.

You may not think that this is a big deal, but if you were a travel blogger during COVID-19. I bet you’d strongly disagree.

You see, everywhere has had heavily restricted travel, so many travel bloggers lost vast amounts of traffic, making their income suffer. They had to struggle through this for months and months.

The same is also true for recession. Some blog niches will do better in this economic climate, while others will suffer instead.

In particular, food blogs have done well in both cases. Since it’s an essential part of our lives, and when money is tight, or you cannot go outside. People are more likely to be staying at home cooking for themselves, rather than takeouts or going out.

Do You Know Enough About The Niche?

4 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Believe it or not, you don’t need to be an expert about your niche to write about it. However, depending on your topic. It may be more or less critical.

So if you decide to go for a niche that you’re not an expert in, you need to make sure that you are clear to your audience about this. It’s not uncommon for bloggers to write about their progress in a particular niche, such as learning a language or starting a new hobby.

However, if it’s a niche that impacts a person’s day-to-day life, like money and health, then it becomes more critical for you to have some expertise. At the end of the day, you need to know more than your audience!

Don’t Start With Your Passions (At First) For Your Niche Ideas

5 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Interestingly, I do not recommend you pick a niche purely based on what you are passionate about.

Passion can be helpful. But it is pointless if you’re starting to build a blog to make money. And that passion of yours isn’t a niche that can be easily monetized or no one searches for.

You can use what you’re passionate about to help decide or come up with blog niche ideas. But it should always be the last deciding factor for which niche you should pick.

This is especially true if you get stuck deciding between several options that meet all the requirements of search volume and robust monetization options.

Lastly, one thing you need to consider when picking your blog niche is your niche expertise. Some niches are affected by Google EAT, like those that impact people’s lives, health, and money.

Ranking in such niches can be challenging because platforms like Google try to suppress articles not written by proven authoritative experts.

So you need to be careful about what kind of topics within your niche you write about. Because if you are trying to write an article on health. You’re probably going to end up writing about medicine.

If you do not have qualifications or a proven history to back yourself up. Then Google may treat your content as less valuable compared to someone who does.

Think about it this way:

Whom do you think Google will consider as more authoritative when it comes to nutritional niches?

  • A brand new blogger who doesn’t have any qualifications?
  • Or someone here has dedicated experience and qualifications as a dietitian?

The answer: Most likely the dietitian.

So consider important factors like this when picking your blog niche ideas.

Think to yourself, can you fit into one of those profitable niches with a topic you enjoy but still meets vital requirements like traffic and profitability.

And don’t forget to weigh up important factors like your expertise, seasonal considerations, and niche stability. Otherwise, you may struggle if there is a recession or pandemic.

If you can’t find something that meets your criteria, then you may need to ask yourself:

What is more important? Writing about your passions or making money?

Just because you’re starting a blog doesn’t mean it needs to make money. There are plenty of people who start hobby blogs that are just for writing about their passions. And that’s perfectly okay.

But if you want the best chances to make money blogging, you need to make sure that your blog is in a profitable niche. If you ignore this, you run the risk of never making money.

If you’re not sure because you’re considering a more obscure niche that isn’t in any list of popular niches. Then you can try putting your blog niche ideas into something like Google Trends or any other keyword research tool like Keysearch or Keywords Everywhere.

This way, you can dig into the actual search volumes. It’s difficult to give you an exact number about what would be profitable and viable as every niche is different.

But if you search for the broadest keywords for your niche, you probably want the volumes to be 50K or more.

The Blog Passion Trap

6 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

So many bloggers tell you to follow your passions when picking a niche. But this mantra can put many bloggers into hot water before they’ve even started a blog.

Let alone realize that writing about your passions is a great motivation only at the beginning. Because if you want to write about your passions and make money. You’ll quickly run out of steam when you’ve written over 50 blog posts and spent 12 months blogging to find you’ve not made a single cent.

You need to brainstorm several blog niche ideas first. Then check if they can make money and how the competition is.

For your first-ever blog, you’ll want something that can clearly be monetized but isn’t too competitive either.

Once you narrow down the list to only ideas that fit these criteria, this is when you can bring passion into it to help narrow down your final choice.

If you just go with your passions first, there’s a high chance you’ll end up with a blog niche that either doesn’t make money or is so competitive for brand new bloggers that you’ll spend years struggling with not much results to show.

Also a blog that makes money will rarely focus on blog posts the author feels like writing. Blogs that are entirely about you are incredibly rare to gain traction. It can happen, but it’s unlikely these days.

Your best bet is to have a successful and popular blog that makes money is to focus on helping people. You should be looking to answer your audience’s questions and solve problems.

Blog Niches vs. No Niche Blog Ideas

Can you pick multiple blog niches for your blog?

The answer is yes and no. Let me explain why:

You can start a multiple niche blog. However, you need to realize that this requires a lot more work compared to a single niche. And because of this, it makes it harder, slower, and more work to see success.

Your blog overall can sometimes be less competitive than if you had a single niche.

For example, Google tends to prefer blogs on a specific topic or niche compared to those who write about a wide range of niches.

7 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

When Google is deciding whom to rank higher in searches, you want to give yourself the best chance to rank high. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure your blog is as niche-focused as possible.

If you have your mind set on starting a multiple niche blog, say like a lifestyle blog. Then, it’s worth focusing on just one of those numerous blog niche ideas first. And write lots of content on it before expanding to a second or third niche for your blog.

This way, you’ll create a blog of content that will keep people interested for longer. Whereas if you add many different niches all at once, your blog posts will feel very scattered and thin. And many readers might not be interested in all those various topics.

Again, I’m not saying that lifestyle or multiple niche blog ideas can’t work. They just require a lot more work and time to work.

Personally, I think you’re just working against yourself. I mean, don’t feel that you have to pick one blog niche when you start a blog, and that’s it.

So many bloggers who keep things simple and see success get the blogging fever and start second blogs and more. Just like Elna from Twins Mommy.

So, if you’re adamant about starting a blog on more than one niche, just pick one to start with first, and master it.

Then when it’s making money, start a second completely separate blog, using everything you’ve learned for that second blog niche that you wanted to write about.

Remember: Just because you want to write about multiple blog niches does not mean they have to be on the same blog!

Food (40)

10 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Food is an everyday thing. It’s essential for our lives, meaning that it’s a prevalent blog topic that people care about. Everyone has to eat, right?

With this niche, it’s unlikely you’ll find it will go out of fashion unless you focus on a specific sub-niche like a particular diet.

For example, the Paleo diet while still popular. It has lost some popularity in the past year or so. Whereas keto, for example, has gained more popularity over the years recently.

Keep in mind that with a food blog, you need to be able to take good photos. There are plenty of courses that will help you do this.

But most importantly, you’ll want to make sure you have either a good camera or a smartphone that has a good camera as an alternative. Something to keep in mind as it will impact how much it costs to start a blog and your budget. (#)

Many bloggers take pictures with their phones rather than a camera, so it can definitely work.

And while it might seem obvious, you need to be able to cook and create recipes. If you tend to end up with a lump of coal when cooking. This might be funny, to begin with, but people will likely get bored of it.

This makes this blog niche particularly time-consuming since you have to make everything yourself. But on the other hand, you can expect high traffic waves as a result.

Primarily income tends to come from ads like Mediavine. In particular, this can be great news during seasonal peaks, like Christmas and Thanksgiving, when pageviews are likely to shoot up.

You can monetize this niche with affiliate marketing sponsors, creating products, and even using ads here.

Lifestyle (11)

13 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

The lifestyle niche is an odd one, while it’s classed as a niche by many bloggers. It usually ends up being a mixture of some other niches from this list combined on one blog.

As highlighted earlier, having a multi-niche blog is more problematic as it’ll take you more time to monetize it.

But lifestyle niche blogs can work if you end up going for niches on your blog that aren’t super competitive. Some niches are just easier to get that foothold to start seeing some success.

This makes it challenging to identify what a lifestyle blog is and which particular topics will work for your audience.

It can be tough to decide what to write about because they’re broad topics and lack focus.

Remember, it can be important to establish yourself as an expert. And if you’re blogging across multiple topics. It can be easy to fall into the trap of being average with everything and an expert of nothing.

Saying that – lifestyle blog niches give some bloggers a flexible option if they cannot decide on a particular niche to start with on their blog.

It can be slightly tricky to get into, and it’s hard to stand out with a lifestyle blog niche.

You do have a high traffic potential, including on Pinterest. And depending on which exact topics you decide to pick, you may need a mixture of your own photography or stock images.

The same is also true for your monetization options. Since your niche topics are likely to be broad, you will likely have a range of options that you can pick to use.

Furthermore, you can either be seasonal or not very seasonal with this niche.

Niche blog examples:

  • A Cup of Jo – relationships, style, travel, motherhood, food, and more
  • Wellness Mama – parenting, beauty, food, DIY hacks, and more
  • Primer – men’s fashion, career, and health

Some sub-topic blog niche ideas that fit into the lifestyle niche:

Unlike the other niches here, there aren’t really any specific examples for sub-topics in this blog niche. Yet there are some common combinations you’ll come across, like these:

  • Parenting, food, home
  • Fashion, beauty, skincare
  • Food, health
  • Crafts, DIY
  • Health, hair, skincare
  • Health, exercise, food
  • Money, business
  • Home, decor, DIY

Notice a pattern here? Most lifestyle blogs stick with closely-related niches like if you care about fashion, there’s a high chance you’ll be interested in beauty and skincare.

Blogging (14)

14 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Blogging is a popular option for new bloggers because it seems obvious that you can make money in this niche.

However, blogging about blogging is probably one of the toughest blog niches to get into as a beginner. This is because you are competing with other bloggers who have been doing this for a while.

Whereas, if this is your first blog, you won’t have any actual proof that you can use to show you know your stuff and that you’re an expert.

I do not recommend that you start a blog about blogging for your very first blog because the competition is crazy hot.

This blog niche idea gets a moderate amount of traffic from search engines. Still, the traffic potential on Pinterest is tiny. So don’t be surprised if getting traffic here is a struggle.

For this particular blog niche, the issue is that it’s very research-intensive. But you’re likely won’t have to do your own photography and instead can use stock images to save yourself time.

Generally, it isn’t seasonal at all, and you’ll probably need some tech confidence to pull this off successfully.

Niche blog examples:

Travel (21)

15 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Travel blogging is usually a high-traffic blog niche. However, with the recent pandemic, this blog niche has taken a significant hit to traffic as people have not been able to travel. While this will recover, it does mean a long period of significantly worse results.

This is why I mentioned early on that it’s so important to consider what may happen with your blog niche in the future. There may be changes around you that might impact your blogs, such as recessions and pandemics.

Under normal circumstances, travel blogging benefits from high monetization potential with the likes of ads and sponsors. It also has a high Pinterest potential. That means that you can get traffic early on.

You’ll most likely use your own photography for your blog. Still, some stock images can probably work as well if they are for a particular location.

Keep in mind that to start with this niche, you’ll likely need to travel yourself so that you can write about the places that you’ve visited. So it could potentially be an expensive blog to start cost-wise. (#)

Keep in mind that travel is a strongly seasonal niche since most travel is in the warmer months. This doesn’t mean there isn’t some potential in the less popular times of the year, but you should expect dips.

Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that this might involve a high startup cost for this niche (#). You’ll possibly need to invest in extra equipment compared to other niches, like a high-quality camera and the software to edit your images like Photoshop.

However, this does mean there’s a high monetization potential as you can become an affiliate for many of those expensive products.

It does have a moderate to high traffic potential if you can tap into it. And you don’t have to worry so much about seasonal dips compared to other niches.

Overall, as a whole, this niche has a high traffic potential, especially on platforms like Pinterest that are very visual.

However, this niche also has additional costs compared to some other niches (#). For example, you’ll need to consider the cost of your supplies.

You should also expect to need a decent amount of photography skills and equipment to help you promote your crafts in the best way.

Craft blogs are optionally seasonal, meaning you can spike your traffic if you focus on creating some content around holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter. This is entirely optional, though, and focusing on evergreen content that’s popular all year round should be your primary focus.

Skincare (12)

24 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Skincare blog niche ideas can be a popular topic as people are willing to spend money to fix their skin problems.

You can expect a moderate amount of traffic in general, and this niche performs relatively well on Pinterest.

There are no significant seasonal aspects to this niche, so you should expect a reasonable amount of traffic all year round. However, you can always add some seasonal elements like focusing on skincare for the winter season. Your skincare routine will likely differ between summer and winter, after all.

Expect there to be reasonable opportunities to monetize with this blog niche. There are many affiliate marketing programs you can join, for starters. Also, you’ll find that often sponsored content for particular brands is also common.

Parenting & Family (16)

26 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

Parenting and family is another popular blog niche, but it’s also fairly broad. So you’ll likely want to narrow down your target audience to be more focused over time.

This is another high traffic potential niche, and you have a moderate amount of potential to get traffic from Pinterest.

You’ll have a high monetization potential with your blog being in this niche too. You can monetize parenting and family blogs with many of the traditional methods of making money blogging.

Again, you’ll need to be careful of medical content or other content that Google EAT may focus on.

And while this niche generally isn’t seasonal, you can add seasonal elements to it if you want to. It’s worth recommending to focus on evergreen content when just starting out and then add some seasonal content later. This way, you can take full advantage of the peaks in traffic like at Christmas and Thanksgiving, for example.

Blog examples:

Sub niches for parenting and family blogs:

  • Mommy
  • Pregnancy
  • Postpartum
  • Single parenting
  • Bullying

Business (14)

27 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

If you’re interested in business or entrepreneurship, this niche might be for you. In contrast, it does have a low Pinterest potential, as it’s not particularly visual. The business blog niche does have a moderate traffic potential overall from platforms like Google and LinkedIn.

Even though it’s not a high traffic niche, there are plenty of high-value monetization options like affiliate products, sponsors, products, and ads.

However, keep in mind, since this is closely related to the money niche, it is highly competitive and hard to get into as a completely new blogger. So you may wish to pick a different, less competitive topic first to build up your skills. You can then start a business blog as a secondary blog once you have refined your skills.

This blog niche idea also benefits from not being very seasonal either. So there are less drastic seasonal dips compared to other niches like the travel niche.

  • Etsy stores
  • Brick and mortar business
  • Office styles

News (10)

28 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

News is an incredibly fast-paced and competitive blog niche that can be a demanding and hard topic to manage as a single writer because of how fast-moving it is.

That’s not to say that it’s not possible if you have enough passion and dedication to work at it. But keep in mind that you’ll often be competing against mega-media outlets that have multiple writers to get content out very quickly.

These big brand news websites also have strong media connections they can leverage. Many of which they can use to get access to products and information earlier than you may by yourself as a new blogger.

This niche has a moderate amount of traffic but very little Pinterest traffic. So you should expect very little traffic from it.

Because of how fast-paced this news niche is, it can be hard to use many monetization methods like affiliate marketing since content can quickly become outdated.

Because of this, most blogs within this niche tend to focus on growing traffic and displaying ads for income. Membership can also be another popular option.

Keep in mind that this niche can also be quite controversial and requires a lot of confidence and a thick skin to tolerate trolls for some of the subtopics in this niche.

Niche blog examples:

  • TechCrunch – a blog focused on tech-based news
  • Mashable – news from the latest technology, science, culture, and more

This blog niche likely does require you to have some experience in the language you’ve picked. But you do not need to be an expert.

If you would like to create a blog that’s focused on your journey of learning a language, then this is something you can do. Just remember you need to know more than your target audience.

Language as one of many blog niche ideas is independent of seasonal trends. But it does require a significant amount of work, research, and practice.

You won’t need to rely on your photography skills for this blog niche, either. And it’s a relatively safe niche to be in as it’s unlikely people will ever stop learning new languages.

  • Methods and techniques for preparing drinks

  • Different products for helping make your drinks taste even better
  • Special recipes, mixes, and so much more

This blog niche has a surprisingly moderate monetization potential, specifically for evergreen marketing and sponsored content.

You don’t particularly need a certain level of expertise. But being passionate about it will likely help you stay motivated with this blog niche idea. After all, writing hundreds of posts on tea could get particularly boring fast.

For a drinks niche blog, you can expect a moderate amount of traffic, and some of this may even come from Pinterest in your early months.

A mixture of your photography and stock images will likely benefit this type of blog too.

Motor Vehicles (23)

35 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

People can be pretty crazy about their motor vehicles, like on a similar level as enthusiasm as people can be with their children and pets. It’s not unheard of for people to give their vehicle a name.

This blog niche has a moderate potential for traffic. However, likely, little of this will come from Pinterest.

There is, however, a considerable potential for monetization. Because of the price range that vehicles generally sit in. This does mean that it might be challenging to gain momentum in the first place or make that first sale.

You’ll find relatively little seasonality for this niche. And you’ll need to have some expertise when it comes to vehicles, which means more research than some other niches.

These motoring blog niche ideas can also be very competitive, so often, you may find yourself competing against big brands.

Like you can follow your interest in a particular type of music. Or, on the other hand, you can go down the route of learning specific instruments.

Gaming (26)

39 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

This fun-sounding blog niche seems like an easy win. But there’s actually plenty of work that goes into maintaining a successful blog for this topic. Gaming can move quickly, and certain games can go out of fashion just as quickly.

So similar to the news niche, this niche requires significant investment into getting started with it. Especially since you may need access to different consoles, the games themselves, all of which aren’t cheap. This is even more true when they’re brand new, as you’ll likely want to get a headstart on anything new.

This particular blog niche is very competitive. And you’ll likely need to take your own screenshots, photos, and even videos.

On a positive note, these gaming-related blog niche ideas have the potential for vast amounts of traffic. But, I wouldn’t expect much of that potential to be on Pinterest. So your focus will likely be Google, YouTube, Discord, Twitch, Facebook, and Twitter.

There are plenty of opportunities to make money with this niche for affiliate marketing, sponsors, and ads. You may even be able to take things one step further and even create your own products for this niche.

I would expect your best chance to succeed in the gaming blog niche to be focusing on a specific game or close-knit genre. After all, gamers tend to have favorite genres and types of games they prefer. You’ll likely struggle with a blog covering everything as most big websites already doing this have tons of money and people to throw at keeping up with everything.

Niche blog examples:

Tech (16)

40 Blogging For Beginners Profitable Blog Niche Ideas

This is a fast-moving blog niche that may even be faster than a general news niche. Because of how quickly this blog niche moves, getting into this blog niche can be expensive and highly competitive, as you’ll likely compete against larger media outlets.

The tech blogging niche has a high traffic potential. It is powerful for monetization due to the high value of individual products you can include on your blog.

You should not expect much traffic from Pinterest as tech-related topics generally don’t do well on here. Instead, Google and, in some cases, Facebook and Twitter would be wiser choices.

Expect this niche to be an all-around evergreen niche that requires a significant amount of work to stay ahead. Tech changes fast, so your writing can quickly become outdated and no longer usable.

You’ll likely need to use your photography to take photos of the actual tech you are reviewing unless you get images provided to you.

Tech topics have an excellent potential for sponsored content. But you can also expect that initially, this may also be an expensive niche to get into for your blog. As you may need to buy or at least get access to the tech yourself. Once you’ve developed, you may be able to get products for free in exchange for your review and promotion.

You should be mindful that you’ll want to narrow down your focus in this particular blogging niche. And be careful of things that may quickly go out of fashion.

  1. I’d like to start a blog specifically on self-love!!! Though closely related to self esteem, it’s definitely different. Self love focuses solely on unconditional self regard based on nothing beyond the idea that you exist and how important that is. Self-esteem is entirely about accomplishments and frequently produces competition and some negativity because of the tendency to compare yourself with others. Self-love is the basis for all success and happiness in life and is needed by easily 80% of the population.

So, I’m very interested in your opinion. Do you think this could be a successful niche?? How about affiliate marketing—what products work specifically with this—I wasn’t sure. I think digital products have potential. But would you be willing to offer any advice for me?? I would appreciate that very much!!!!!

    1. Hey Kim,
I think it might match well with the self-care topics and it should work as a niche.
You’d mostly monetize with products and an email list, but ads and affiliate programs are also options. A quick Google found this affiliate program, that has a Self Love Workbook and Self Care planner. I’m sure there will be others, they might just be little trickier to find.
