115 Free Stock Images Sites You’ll Want To Use On Your Blog

This post contains affiliate links. Which means I will make a commission at no extra cost to you should you click through and make a purchase. Read the full disclosure here.

You know that free stock images are a game-changer, right?

If you don’t then you are hugely underestimating the power that they hold over your content. As stock images both free and premium can have many benefits. Especially for bloggers, because it is important for us to write engaging, easy to understand content. That is helpful, convincing and inspiring.

Even if you are writing your first ever blog post. Images should be a serious consideration to help you write an amazing blog post.

You don’t have to take my word for it though, as there is tons of research that supports this. Like:

  • Color visuals increase the willingness to read by 80%
  • People following directions with text and illustrations do 323% better than without.
  • 67% of an audience was persuaded by a verbal presentation when accompanied with visuals. Compared to only 50% with just a verbal presentation.

Finding stock images that you can use for free isn’t always easy though. In fact, it can be a bit of a minefield. If you are not aware of what you can and can’t do with these images on your blog.

Pro Tip: When using images in your blog posts make sure you aren’t making any of these top mistakes. As you’d be surprised the kind of impact they can have on your blog otherwise.

So to help clear up the confusion and give you a huge variety to find images from. I’ve come up with this list of 115 places where you can get free stock images. The kind of images that you’ll actually want to use on your blog because of their high quality.

115 free stock image sites you'll want to use on your blog

What You Need To Know About Free Stock Images Before You Start

Using stock images or any image, in general, can come with a lot of extra work. There are many mistakes you can make when adding images to your blog posts. As well as serious legal implications. Unless you create all your own blog images. Which many of us don’t have time for.

It is also worth noting that many sites that have free stock images. Will also show paid/sponsored images on some part of their site. Usually the top few rows of stock images might be premium stock. So keep this in mind when clicking. Otherwise you might be disappointed.

I’ve also tried to link to the relevant license and terms pages for these stock images and photos websites. As sometimes these are tricky to find. As every website varies on where they put them and how they are named. It is important that you check these pages out yourself. If you decide to use the stock images for a particular website or several.

Common Free Stock Images Jargon Explained

There is also tons of jargon when it comes to using images. Which I’ve tried to explain in plain English below.

Important! This information is not legal advice. I am not a legal expert and the information here is simply my opinion and interpretation. You should make sure to check and understand what you can and can’t do with these images using the actual license page.

If you are in any doubt as to whether you can use an image for a specific project you have in mind. Then you should either not use the image at all. Or consider contacting the author or website owner to clarify and get permission. It is better safe than sorry!

Now, onto the jargon explanations and common questions.

Can Images Be Copyrighted?

As a blogger you should already have an idea about copyright. The content you create is automatically covered by copyright.

In the case of images, copyright is often owned by who ever took the image in the first place. Every image on the internet will have some form of copyright. And you need to ensure the image’s license allows you to use them on your blog in the first place.

What Are Public Domain Images?

Public domain images are free from copyright, patent, trademark or intellectual property restrictions. This could be because they were waived, not applicable, expired or forfeited.

Many old images made before 1923 as consider public domain. But determining the age of image files is tricky business. It is important to note that the images you find in Google Search are not necessarily public domain. In general, anything that is classed as Public domain will be clearly identified as such.

What Is Image Attribution?

Also known as giving credit to the author or source. You’ll likely find that some sources of stock images will require you to give a link back. Make sure to read carefully any instructions provided to do this. You might even be given some code to copy and paste with the exact wording requested.

What Does Share Alike Mean?

Share Alike allows the sharing of work based on the original image. But the same identical licensing must be used. For example, an image that is licensed to be used freely providing credit is given (even for commercial use). Any new variations of this image cannot be created and then licensed as non-commercial use only. As this is more restricted compared to the original.

What Does Non-Commercial & Commercial Use Mean?

Sometimes you’ll come across free stock images that can only be used for non-commercial use. Others allow their use in commercial projects.

Non-commercial (sometimes also referred to as personal use) usually means a project that does not provide goods or services in exchange for money. For bloggers this would mean nonprofit and hobby blogs.

If you monetize your blog then it likely falls into the commercial category. So you should probably avoid using any stock images that are only for non-commercial or personal use.

What Is An Image License?

An image license is all the rules for using an image. Every image including stock images will have some sort of license associated with it.

There are several different types of licenses out there. But in most cases, you will hear them mentioned in relation to the Creative Commons or CC. Who are a nonprofit organization.

Sometimes you will come across unique image licenses for certain websites or brands. For example the Pexels License is specific to images found on Pexels.com!

This is perfectly normal, though sometimes confusing. Either way you need to make sure you read these image licenses. Before adding the stock images to your blog. To make sure you do not break any of the rules. Which can get you into serious legal trouble.

Just think of them as like Pinterest group board rules. Only more serious!

Right, now let’s take a look at the different Creative Commons image licenses you’ll likely find.

Creative Commons 1.0 (CC0) License

There are several different creative commons ranging from 1.0 to 5.0. Most of these refer to slight updates of the conditions laid out on the official pages.

With CC0 this is usually specific to free stock images that don’t have many restrictions. Sometimes it is also referred to as the public domain. Usually, CC0 images are:

  • Free to use for personal and commercial use
  • Editing is allowed
  • No attribution required

Creative Commons 2.0 (CC2) & Creative Commons 3.0 (CC3)

CC3 is the more updated version of these two licenses. Other than this they are very similar and the key points of usage are usually.

  • Allows using the image in both non-commercial and commercial uses
  • Allows editing the image
  • Requires attribution

What Does It Mean If Something Is Royalty-Free?

Firstly, to be clear. Royalty-Free does not mean that an image is completely free to use how you like. In fact, what it actually means is that you pay the fee for the license once and do not pay a recurring fee every time you want to reuse the image.

How much the actual fee is, varies. It could be $0 or $10 or something else. You simply need to know that you only have to go through the process of acquiring the license once.

General Etiquette For Using Free Stock Images On Your Blog

In general, it is usually considered good etiquette to avoid doing certain things with stock images. Here’s a list of things you should NOT do with them. Period. As they are almost always prohibited:

  • Resell
  • Redistribute
  • Use in work you plan to sell, such as an ebook
  • Claim as your own
  • Use the photos in a negative or harmful way

Now, that we’ve cover the jargon basics. Let’s get started with the actual list of websites where you can get free stock images!

Tip: I’ve grouped all these different stock photo websites by their image licenses. Each section summarizing the key rules you are likely to see for those websites. And the further down the list you go. Usually the more requirements and restrictions there are.

The Best Free Stock Images That Are Perfect To Use On Your Blog

Wow!

When I started this, I didn’t quite expect to find just so many high-quality free stock photo websites out there. I almost want to use some stock images from all the websites here! Or just look at amazing cat pictures. Or any animal pictures even!

What is even more surprising, is the amount of dead or poor quality stock image websites I found. I think for every amazing link I found, I also found 1 link I had to throw onto my “do not use pile”.

Good news is. You get the benefit of having to skip all that with this list!

Where To Start With These Free Stock Image Websites

Now, I know 115 is a lot. But I hope organizing this list into license groups can help you narrow things down. As well as the styled stock section being organized by the amount of stock images you get.

But just in case this isn’t enough. Here are my top 5 choices to get started with:

And to top that off. Here are some other useful stock image websites. For when you need something specific:

  • Focus Fitness for high quality CC0 stock images for fitness, weight loss and food niches.
  • Magic Mockups to create mockups of your digital products and designs on smartphones, tablets, laptops and screens. In just a few clicks. No Photoshop required!
  • Gratisography for the most unique and quirky stock images
  • IconMonstr for all your icon stock needs

Got anything you want to add to the list? How about you tell me, which is your favourite stock images website? Are there any types of stock images that you really struggle to find?

If you found this blog post useful then please consider taking a few seconds to share it to your favorite social media platform!
