What Is The Squirrly SEO Plugin?
Squirrly is an SEO WordPress plugin that is designed to help improve your blog’s ranking with Google.
Squirrly SEO does this by analyzing 200 features that impact your SEO results. Including 54 critical ranking factors that Google uses.
They describe their plugin as:
You’ll go from “Never Found” to Always Found on the First Page of Google.Squirrly SEO
Squirrly SEO breaks everything down into the smallest steps on a page by page basis. No changes you’ll make are likely to be the same. As every piece of content you write is different. The structure and how Squirrly works reflects on this.
Whilst Squirrly does stick to a simple red indicator for when changes are required. Or green to indicate it is complete. It is far more complicated than the Yoast SEO plugin.
As there are a huge amount of checks to complete. Beyond the writing assistant, you will find when writing your latest blog post.
Currently, there are two main versions of Squirrly SEO included in this review that you’ll need to know about:
- Free version – This has less frequent audits. And lower monthly keyword research limits.
- Pro version – 100 keyword searches per month, audits can be done hourly and other limits are removed.
I’ll cover in more detail the major differences between these 2 versions later.

Squirrly SEO Review Of Features
Let’s look at and review Squirrly SEO with it’s key features in detail. As there are quite a few that can help your SEO strategy in a variety of ways.
Squirrly SEO Focus Pages
Focus pages are used to analyze your most important blog posts. Across 54 critical ranking factors. These pages will also show a column for the chance to rank. So you can see exactly how likely your pages are going to rank.
Including things like:
- The keywords you are using + if they are realistic
- Whether you need to include more SEO content
- Traffic health
- Page Authority
- Inner + outbound Links
- SEO images
- Platform SEO & Health
- Social signals
Focus pages are great for focusing on just a few pages at a time to help prevent overwhelming yourself.
They can also be used to focus on what is important to your goals. Such as optimizing your most profitable blog posts so they can earn more. Or the blog posts you find convert best to email subscribers to supercharge your list growth.
Best of all you can track your progress with a tangible list of things to do that can be measured. That you can be confident will help move the needle on your SEO progress.
Keyword Research Tool
The Squirrly SEO Keyword generator will help you find words you can actually rank for.
This tool makes doing keyword research super easy. Enter in some seed keywords. And Squirrly will generate a bunch of related keywords that are long tail. You can then select several of these that are relevant to your blog post.
Which Squirrly will use to populate final keyword ideas. As well as additional information. So you can see the volume of search, whether it is easy or hard to rank for and even the social media trend for it.
All of these words and ranking difficulties are based on your blog. Not some generic cookie cutter version. So if the tool says it is easy to rank for. Then your blog has a real chance to rank for it.
No more guessing with the competition data from tools like keyword finder. Which are based on the competition for paid ads.
Squirrly SEO Briefcase
Once you’ve used the keyword generator. The Squirrly SEO plugin helps you to put this together with your content. By allowing you to save the best keywords into what is called a briefcase.
Here you can group your keywords, review their stats at a later date. And even pull them into your blog posts. Using the Live Assistant tool.
What’s even more useful, is that you’ll be able to see how many times the keyword is used in your content. Plus how many of those are currently ranking.
SEO Live Assistant
Next, let’s review the Squirrly SEO Live Assistant tool
This blog tool checks for things like:
- Using your keywords in the right places
- Warning for over-optimization
- Ensures your writing is human-friendly and not keyword-stuffed
- Checks your titles & meta-data of Google-friendly
- Images and alt tags are included correctly
It works completely live in the WordPress editor. So you’ll get instant feedback on how you are doing. And can optimize your posts while writing instead of having to go back and redo it later.
Oh and as a bonus. The SEO live assistant in Squirrly. Will let you optimize for multiple keywords in the free plugin. Unlike Yoast which restricts you to only one.
Next up is the blogging assistant. This nifty little tool sits above the SEO Live Assistant. Here you can enter your keywords and click search.
This will then go away and find related copyright-free images right inside the editor. So no need to go looking for images elsewhere. It will even automatically include the keywords in the alt text for you.
In addition, to bringing up related images you can use. It also can help you find extra content for your blog posts. Such as embedded tweets, Wikipedia references, and excerpts.
You can even quickly find related content already published on your blog. That you can cite or insert snippets from. So, you don’t have to leave your editor to go check the blog posts in your WordPress dashboard.
Google SERP Checker
This small but powerful tool will let you check exactly where you are ranking for your keywords. On any particular day. Rather than the average, you’ll see in places like Google Search console.
You can also easily track your ranking by seeing your best ranking for a keyword too. So you’ll know at a glance if your current ranking position is the best it’s been. Or it has slipped recently and needs a bit more work to bring it back up.
(Sadly, if you use the free version, you will only see your average rankings.)
This tool will also give you stats for how your content performs. On different social media platforms.
Bulk SEO Settings
This part of the plugin gives you an overview of all your pages. In terms of critical meta information and visibility.
Here you can quickly see if any of your blog posts aren’t visible to search engines. Plus whether there is any information missing. Such as meta-titles, descriptions or other things like Open Graph data. Which is used when sharing your posts to Facebook.
Overall, this can make it a quick process to go back to older blog posts. So you can update them if they are missing any information in just a few minutes. Instead of having to open up each blog post and check manually in the WordPress editor.
SEO Weekly Audits
If all the tools and feedback you get from the plugin doesn’t motivate you to action. Then these SEO Weekly Audits will.
Squirrly will do a weekly audit for your blog and create a report of the results. The report will give your blog a score and break down this into sections. Like:
Each of these sections will include the suggested steps to take. As well as tips on how to go about completing them.
These weekly audits are included in the free version of the plugin. With audits available as often as hourly for Pro users.
Other Features In The Squirrly SEO Plugin
Here are some more Squirrly SEO review features that are important to consider.
Customize and preview your Facebook posts and Twitter Cards. Unlike Yoast SEO which locks this behind their premium plugin. This option is available for all free users of Squirrly.
Customization options for eCommerce blogs
Sitemap XML creation that you can customize to your blogging schedule. So Squirrly can keep Google updated on your latest content or changes.
Schema markups for your blog to help Google understand your content better. But also provide extra information to your audience. Such as displaying a profile for your blog in search results.
Or helping your content get found in Voice Answers, Maps, and Google Now. Or even stuff that gets your blog posts first few steps or list items as a featured snippet in Google too.
Warning for duplicate issues on your blog. In various places like the SEO Audit report and many of the overview screens. Where you can view all your pages.
Squirrly vs Yoast
I’ve mentioned a few differences between the Squirrly SEO plugin compared to Yoast. But what other variations are there? How does this Squirrly SEO review compare to Yoast?
However, more specifically if we review Squirrly SEO. It is designed to do all the complex SEO thinking for you. By breaking everything into small steps. So, all you need to focus on is completing those steps.
Most importantly everything it is asking you to do. Will always be relevant to the way Google’s search engine works today.
Squirrly SEO can take much of the guessing out of your SEO strategy. With easy to track results, objective steps that you can measure. Plus actual feedback on the exact results and where your pages are ranking. Not some average estimate figure.
On the other hand Yoast SEO, whilst also beginner-friendly. It also doesn’t give you many actionable steps you can take to improve your blog’s SEO.
Squirrly Is Complicated vs Yoast SEO
Overall, because this Squirrly SEO review covers so many features and customization options. It can make the plugin seem complex. And you might find yourself wondering why you need to do all of these different things. When Yoast makes things more simple.
Well, the fact is, Squirrly looks at 200 different features, whereas Yoast SEO just looks at 15.
This can be both a bad and a good thing. Yoast is simple. Making it easier to use. But your overall SEO strategy will be oversimplified if you only use Yoast.
As it limits your options more and doesn’t keep in mind as many ranking factors as Squirrly. In this way, Yoast has a rather cookie-cutter approach.
Whereas, Squirrly might seem daunting because it covers many more factors. And everything is customized to your blog.
It isn’t more complicated as it still provides you with step-by-step suggestions and guides. There are just significantly more of them.
Squirrly SEO Pricing
As part of this Squirrly SEO review, we should consider the pricing of the Pro plugin vs the free version.
The Squirrly Pro plan which is ideal for bloggers starts at $29.99 per month
This might be a little on the high side personally. But sometimes there are sales for a discounted price. You may even get one after completing their 14 days to better-ranking mini-course.
If Squirrly SEO Pro isn’t your thing. Then the free version is still highly valuable.
You just might find yourself a bit more limited. As you only get 3 keyword searches per month. And SEO audits are weekly.
Sadly the Live Assistant included with the free version only checks some basic settings for your blog posts. Compared to the premium version. Plus the Blogging Assistant isn’t even included with the free plugin.
But you can still preview Facebook and Twitter posts without publishing. As well as use multiple keywords per blog post.
Whereas both of these features are missing from Yoast SEO. Unless you upgrade to their premium plugin.
For you to find the exact details on the differences between the free and Squirrly Pro versions. As part of this Squirrly SEO review. The best way to check is while you have Squirrly SEO installed.
You can go to the WordPress dashboard left side menu. Go to Squirrly SEO > Account Info. Which will show your current allowances.
Then if you click on the blue Pricing & Plans button. It will bring up a full comparison table. Something I haven’t been able to find on their website.
14 Days To Better Ranking
When you first get Squirrly SEO you will have the option to join their 14 days to better ranking course.
This free course will take you through set lessons and daily tasks. That aim to take you step-by-step through how to optimize one of your blog posts using Squirrly SEO.
The idea being that if you do the work and follow the instructions. Then at the end of the 14 days, you will have improved your chosen blog post to show on page #1 of Google.
And that this entire process can be replicated for each of your blog posts for similar results.
This is an extremely valuable resource and a perfect way to review Squirrly SEO
So, if you do plan to review Squirrly SEO with a more
After these 14 days you will be reverted back to the free version of the plugin. Unless you pay to upgrade.
So it is important to get as much use out of these 14 days. As you will be able to see for yourself how everything works. Plus you can get results for yourself. Without any risks or fees.
Free vs Pro Squirrly SEO Review
The free version of the Squirrly SEO plugin has some features which have been removed. As well as others that have been limited in some way. Here are some of the key features of the free version compared to the premium one.
Squirrly SEO Free
- Supports 1 website only
- 3 Keyword searches per month
- SEO Live Assistant Lite only checks a small amount features in your blog posts
- No Blogging Assistant for finding related images, Tweets etc.
- 1 Focus page can be optimized at a time
- SEO Audit reports are only generated weekly
Squirrly SEO Pro
- Supports up to 7 websites
- 100 Keyword searches per month
- SEO Live Assistant Pro has many more optimization checks for your blog posts
- Blogging Assistant included
- 5 Focus pages can be optimized at the same time
- SEO Audits can be requested as often as hourly
Overall, the number of free searches you get per month using their keyword generator. Seems to be barely enough to optimize for a single new blog post every month. This just isn’t enough.
It is worth noting. That whilst I don’t recommend installing more than one SEO plugin as a beginner blogger. You can do this, if you want to combine free features from different plugins.
But you’ll need to be careful with duplicate settings. And check for any negative impact on your blog speed.
The One Critical SEO Ranking Factor That Many Bloggers Miss
There’s one important SEO factor that I want to emphasize though. And that is that your SEO results are also highly dependant on off-page factors such as your backlinks. Not just on-page SEO factors.
If you do not put effort into growing these. Then your SEO will never go anywhere. No matter what WordPress SEO plugin you decide to use.
This is something that Yoast SEO never tells you. And many bloggers assume that if you get all green lights that’s all you need. This isn’t true.
Squirrly does a better job at highlighting this if you follow their suggestions and guide. It will also suggest it as something to improve. But I felt like I needed to emphasize it a bit more here.
Is The Cost Of Squirrly Pro Worth It?
Let’s review whether the cost of Squirrly SEO Pro is worth it!
As you can see from the sections I’ve covered above. Squirrly SEO has a ton of useful features to help guide you through the complicated process of SEO.
All of this is reflected by the price. As at $29.99 it isn’t what I would call budget-friendly for beginner bloggers. After all, that’s about the same as the cost to get Tailwind with all the bells and whistles.
Squirrly Can Combine Multiple Tools Including Premium Versions Into One
However, if you are already investing in a keyword tool. These tend to get expensive or might not stay free forever. Like the popular Keywords Everywhere addon that switched from free to credit in October 2019.
Then Squirrly could be an option to combine the costs of other tools you might have or need. Into one complete solution. Because that is pretty much how I would describe Squirrly.
As a complete, all in one solution to help get your blog ranking in Google. As it covers all crucial tasks and settings you need to do like:
- Core blog settings
- Consistently filling in meta-data
- Making content that is keyword optimized but friendly for humans
- Keyword research
- Content tools to find images, quotes, tweets and media to enhance your content
- Tools to help you interlink and leverage the content you already have
- Tracking of results so you know exactly where you are
- Customized suggestions so you know what to do next to move the needle
- Removes the guessing as there are tons of analytics so you know what is what
- Additional education to help you learn as you use the tool. That’s always using the latest white hat techniques so you don’t have to worry about old information.
Squirrly SEO Is Only Worth It If You Are Ready To Focus On SEO
So, in short – based on this review of the Squirrly SEO plugin. It appears it can be a good investment.
Especially if you are completely new to SEO. But want to take it much more seriously without guessing what you need to do. Or trying to make sense of complex analytics and resources. Such as the Google Search Console.
But just because I think it is a smart investment. It doesn’t mean you should go and get it right now.
In fact, whilst I think SEO is a vital strategy you should start to focus on as soon as you’ve got to grips with Pinterest.
SEO is only a valuable area to focus on if you put in the work.
If SEO isn’t part of your strategy right now. Then this tool is a waste of time and money for you.
You need to evaluate whether this is something you want to focus on. And spend the actual time implementing the tool’s features.
Because it is not a magic button that will instantly make your blog rank. It takes time and effort to use the Squirrly SEO plugin before you will see results.
Also, it is possible to have an amazing SEO strategy without this plugin. You might just find it is much harder to figure out all by yourself though. Plus it will likely take a lot longer to see results. Not to mention trial and error.
So, keep this in mind and consider the value of your time!
Recap On The Squirrly SEO Review
This review of the Squirrly SEO Pro plugin. Shows that it can bring many more detailed features to the table. That you can use to optimize your blog’s SEO. Beyond that of other plugins.
As it gives customized suggestions based on your entire blog stats. And the latest information directly from Google.
Whilst the Pro version of the plugin is a bit on the expensive side for beginner bloggers. And really should only be considered when you are ready to focus on working hard to optimize your SEO.
The free version of the plugin is also a great alternative if the Squirrly Pro is out of your price range. You might just need a little patience. As there are some monthly limitations for keyword research and SEO audits.
Also, as mentioned earlier in this Squirrly SEO review. There are several features included in the free Squirrly plugin. Which you can only get in Yoast SEO if you pay for their premium version.
Such as optimizing your blog posts for multiple keywords. And previewing what your blog posts will look like when shared to social media.
So, if you want to up your SEO game. Then Squirrly is well worth the time to check out and get involved in their 14 days to better ranking course. Because it will give you more room to grow than Yoast SEO.
The question is – are you going to try Squirrly SEO for your blog? How high of a priority is your SEO strategy for where you are now?
